My name is Matthew Kerwin. As of the time of this writing (May 17 2010) I've been out of Olivet College for just about exactly a year with a Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science. I'm currently jobless due to the job market and a lack of experience in the field, the old catch-22 about needing to have job experience to get a job.
Sometimes I feel like my education hasn't given me any useful skills. I was a good student, but it seems like a semester was never long enough to really get into a useful depth on any topic. Still, learning all that means I have had the groundwork laid for a large number of things that I can learn quickly when I need to: programming languages, database work, and web design, for instance.
This blog is an attempt to get more practice in the internet side of computer science, something I feel was lacking in my education at Olivet. I haven't had the money for web hosting, and in the past the free stuff available seemed pretty terrible, but Google's so far been working well for this.
I don't yet have much of a presence on the internet. I post regularly on a few forums, primarily those at white-wolf.com and rpg.net (going by the name MKerwin at both.) I keep a Facebook account updated and check on it every few days. I'm trying to post something on this blog every day, and someday it might even grow enough that I'll make a little money off of it. Nothing like a job, I'm sure, but in this economy every cent is a welcome boon.
